Sommer Idyll

all the empty chairs
are facing me, blue-backed
like good soldiers
they do not look me in the eye
they do not move
to break the silence
which is not silence at all
but the noise of an empty room,
hum of fans, buzz of lamps
my breathing
these snapping keys

through a wall of windows
June is grey, rain-laden cement
and green, the leaves and grass
who are the only ones who know
what to do with all this water
